yummy

I miss the way you never bit me, even when I did so many things to you.
Threw you in the pool, placed you on top of my cupboard, spun you around in circles, covered your eyes with bandages, pulled your tail, dropped you suddenly for no reason, sat on you (not really).
Your tail always wagged, you always loved me no matter what.

I miss the way you were always there for me.
When I had fights with my mum, I always had someone to cling on to, to hug my tears away.
When I had a shower, and was scared, I always had you with me, sleeping there, staring at me, always there.
When I studied for my HSC, my stress levels reached high levels, you were always there, right beneath my feet, snuggling me with your warmth.
Whenever I slept late, whether it was because I was studying or just on the internet, you were always there, sleeping or staring at me.
Whenever I didn't want to go to sleep, because I was scared, I would always sneak you into my room, onto my bed, put my arms around your soft fur, and would not feel scared ever again.
Whenever I was cold (as rare as that may be) you were there for me, like a everlasting hot water bottle that never failed to warm me up.
Whenever I was super bored, just wanted to go for a walk, you would always come along, your tail wagging, your face so happy.

I loved your many eccentricities.
I loved how you tried to communicate with me, you little barks that seemed like you were trying to say "your confusing me" "I love you" "I'm excited" "I'm hungry" "I want to go for a walk" "Open the door".
You could sit, you could stand, you could even play dead.
I loved how you always scratched your ear, as gross as it may be, and as smelly as it was.
I loved how you would have diahhera then drag your butt on the concrete, leaving a track.
I loved how you smelt.
I loved your fur.
I loved your tail.
I loved your eyes, even when they were covered up by your long fur.
I loved how you would bark in confusion, start scratching and pulling me when I played dead.
I loved how you drank out of the swimming pool (although I stopped you straight after)
I loved how you could eat anything, cucumbers, salads, vegetables and various fruits.
I loved how you would tip toe to hunt for birds, but always missed cause you weren't fast enough.
I loved how you got tired so easily from a heavy walk, would just sit there, and refuse to move, until I drag or carry you.
I loved how you would whine, whenever we had to put you enclosed somewhere, after you had a bath.
I loved your paws, so big and fluffy, with a black dot on one of them.
I loved the way you walked, the way your bum swayed, it was so cute and bouncy.
I loved how you would chase after a ball, that never got thrown.
I loved how whenever we played hide and seek, you would always find me first.
I loved the way you loved me.

I loved you so much.
It hurts.

ITS OVER

LITERALLY
I've finished my HSC
and man do I wish I did better, I know I could I know I just know
the thing is after the exams I feel okay (apart from physics like always)
then I go onto Bored of studies.. and wham every stupid mistake becomes so clear
and people there are like

"Hoping for a raw mark of 84 for Chem, Raw 89 for Physics, Raw 85 for English, Raw 83 for ext english, Raw 90 for maths, Raw 89 for maths ext'

and THEN they are like
"Hoping for 92 plus UAI"
and I'm just sitting their thinking
the raws you are hoping for are so.. GOOD
I'm not really getting anywhere near that..
more like I'm hoping for
"Raw 90 for english, Raw 80 for physics, Raw 90 for ext english, Raw 88 for eco, Raw 90 for Maths, Raw 75 for Maths ext..."
ahh
see my raws are so much lower than theirs (pokes Maths and physics)
YET I'm still hoping for a UAI OVER 95....while their raws are so much higher.. and only hoping for over 92 -_-
Crap crap crap. I'm never going to get into the course I want if I dont get over 95 T.T
NEVER
and seriously, I thought doing the HSC was stressful
turns out its even more scary after.. cause you know thats it. you can do nought about it.
you UAI is set in stone...
I just need to get over 95.. but I'm probably not
life is sad.
well its over... not really
its like its so scary.. the prospect of having to recieve my uai
hoping for over 95
and getting
88 or something
I dont know what I would do.
honestly
its like everytime I think I do well for physics
but I get my exam back and there I am... pratically bottom of the class -_________________-
what happens if thats the same for UAI?

One thing for sure, stressing is going to do nothing.
*goes look for a job* maybe I should become a stock broker
the australian financial market is so volatile at the moment =)
so either lose all my money or.. mwahahahaa
please oh please let me get over 95....
but things never go right anyway

great

its getting really annoying how they are always always
coming over to our house to play. Whether it is out for dinner, morning, afternoon or even 11 0' clock at night.
I know they just little kids, but I swear they can just piss the hell out of me all the time.

I mean, they are just KIDS! how can I possibly let them get to my head?
but now that they live 5 minutes away from our house, its getting increasingly harder.

And its the little one that angers me the most, so violent and annoying.
He likes to throw rocks, chase people with broomsticks, throw my dog in the swimming pool, pop every poppable thing in the my place including my new swimming- pool -inflatable sofa
and had once poured pencil sharpening down a little boy's ear who had to go to hospital.
So rude for a 11 year old, who once forced me to scream at him because he actually kicked me on the v**ina really hard! yes, and absolutely on purpose it was.

And its not just the physical things, its the emotional things too. I don't need them to come over everyday, point at my pimples
due to stress before exams, laugh at everything that is the slightest bit funny about my hair, my clothes.

and sometimes, the little things just build up, and I feel so frustrated at them, and the more I feel frustrated, the dumber
I feel because they are just little kids. They know what they do gets to me, so they just continue.
THIS IS FOR MY TEACHER TO READ

Essay practice two

Question: “transformations” require an imaginative reshaping of significant elements of a text for new contexts.

Select TWO significant elements of Shakespeare’s hamlet and analyse how they are reshaped to create meaning in Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guilderstein are dead

BY YUE MRS ORDELL

The transformations of texts do require the imaginative reshaping of significant elements, which are usually done due to a change in context. This can be shown in Stoppard’s postmodernist transformation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Stoppard, through his use of language and play in his depiction of elements such as identity and art (theatre) in Hamlet, successfully transforms the play into his own Rosencrantz and Guilderstein are dead. By doing so, we also able to see that both Shakespeare’s and Stoppard’s context is an important driving force in how a text is portrayed.

The value and search for identity is a prominent element evident in Hamlet. The Renaissance saw a sceptical strain on humanism, where it was taken for granted a universalism of human and identity. Philosophers such as Pico who wrote essays that praised human greatness was opposed by more negative views of humanity, as expressed in the works of people like Montaigne. This is the time where Shakespeare places his characters, and it is shown when Hamlet says “What a piece of work is a man!....the beauty of the world!”. This is directly based upon Pico’s Essay and is important in showing how the play is fitted to its context.

The eponymous Hamlet is constantly searching for a sense of identity. His identity crisis can be said to stem from two main factors- his heightened emotions and his struggle between cultural expectations. Hamlet is constantly in contemplation, right from his “to be or not to be” with what he should do. He is both in despair over his mother’s marriage to his uncle shown through the repetition of “oh god!”, and in anguished confusion over the appearance of his father’s ghost. Denmark, during this time of rivalry in feudal values, was in a state of transition between the Heroic world - where a man’s honour was foremost, and the Christian world of love and forgiveness. Hamlet’s father belonged to the Heroic world, where it was expected that Hamlet should take revenge. The ghost therefore represents a paradigm of obedience, where there is the belief that Humanity does what is natural to achieve justice. “But two months” says his father, emphasising the importance placed on the need to revenge. This becomes an important element in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, whereby Hamlet’s search for identity becomes extremely difficult. As a result, he seeks that he will “Put an antic disposition on”, where he feigns madness as a means of escape. As the play progresses, we see that his emotions are constantly changing. His tone becomes calm as he says “there’s a divinity that shapes our ends...we will” and it seems that he no longer cares for revenge, allowing fate to take its course. However, this quickly changes when his mother is poisoned, as Hamlet, incensed in rage, finally kills Claudius.

As a result, identity can be viewed as a significant element in Hamlet, where there is an exploration of a complex character-hamlet, searching for an identity in a society of political and religious turmoil. Hamlet, in the final moments says “This is I, Hamlet the Dane” which shows that he, at last, accepts his identity and acknowledges his position in society. In Rosencrantz and Guilderstein however, R & G are merely stock characters inside Hamlet, and Stoppard, by foregrounding their side of the story has imaginatively reshaped the Hamlet, in order to suit a modern audience. Stoppard, though his play, is exploring the 20th century notion of existentialism. R & G are representative of humanity’s exiential despair. Like Hamlet, they too, are constantly in search for an identity, however, their search is different to hamlet, in the sense that they, unlike hamlet, are actually searching for an explanation for their existence and even at the end of the play we find that they have no particular identity.

Throughout the play, the two finishes off each other’s sentences “I’m out of step here”-“Don’t let them confuse you” and ironically, they even get themselves mixed up. “ I am Rosencrantz (not embarrassed)... Guilderstein!”. It becomes apparent to the audience that their identities are blurred, and as the title states, they are merely known as “Rosencrantz and Guilderstein” as the two are never seen without each other. Early in the play, the audience realises the R & G although now the protagonists, still do not really have a plight of real meaningful significance. “ I remember when there was no questions...yes” is one the many examples of the type of questions that are asked between the two characters. Such questions are representative of the idea of exientialism, which was an arising concept during Stoppard’s time that explored the questions of human existence and ability for them to live outside of society and power.

As a result, it becomes evident that the two’s search for identity is tied closely with their context-a disordered 20th century that defies accepted logic and rules. This can be further supported by the coin tossing that occurs at the start of the play-“Eighty five in a row” which is accentuated by use of burlesque. In such a world of disorder and arising questions about belief and human existence, Rosencrantz and Guilderstein struggle to come to terms with their own identities. The play is full of rhetorical questions “ is there god?” “Is there a choice?”, as they seek to reflect on their world, but come to no particular answer. Unlike Hamlet, who contemplates through soliquey and other fanciful Shakespearean language, Rosencrantz and Guilderstein’s attempts to understand their place in the world is displayed as being disjointed and at many times incoherent. The two draws upon concepts by which 20th century assured of self predictability in an attempt to make sense of themselves and their world. “ The scientific approach to the examination””The law of diminishing returns..” are examples in which the two play around with intellectual concepts. Their references are almost superficial, if not paradoxically humorous, showing that Stoppard is trying to point out the lack of metaphysical insights in empirist thinking. Along with the teasing of Rosencrantz through the blatant use of syllogism, Stoppard shows the results of an academic education more modern than the Elizabethan. It is through these examples of imaginative reshaping in which we see that Rosencrantz and Guilderstein is transformed into a more modern play, where it becomes evident that the element of identity becomes appropriated to suit different contexts.

Another significant element that is explored in Hamlet, is the role of art. Art, In Hamlet on a microcosmic level, is predominately seen in met theatre-a play within play as conducted by the players. In hamlet, it can be seen that art can indeed add to the meaning of life “Twis a mirror up to nature”. Says one of the players, emphasising that art becomes an important part of how we live. Hamlet accepts and undoubtly realises that death will result for himself if he kills Claudius, and he acknowledges this. This is because Hamlet is part of a revenge tragedy, a work of art and so consequently he must die. Shakespeare’s time saw many traditional revenge tragedies. People such as Aristotle and Thomas Lyd emphasised that the avenger must be killed after they kill. Hamlet is clearly reflective of this idea as seen through intersexuality when he makes references to famous revenge tragedies “ Drink hot blood” he says, moments before he kills Claudius. This further marks the importance of theatre in Shakespeare’s time, theatre, as a form of art has the ability to construct our responses, adding to the meaning of life. Hamlet struggles about honest the ghost is throughout much of the play, acting mad as a means to protect himself until he chooses his actions. During his act of madness, he immediately becomes interested and coherent when he meets the players, hearing the news that a play would be performed. He speaks with passion “ As I may...whirlwind of your passion”. This contrast in emotions is humorous, as we begin to see the importance of theatre during the time.

Hamlet, through his hesitation and disbelief of the ghost at the beginning of the play is shown to be highly problematic. By doing so, he is not fulfilling the role of a conventional revenge tragedy. As a result it can be argued that he opens up a new role for himself, and this role has never been played before in art-mainly theatre. By finally dying, we see that hamlet has fulfilled his role as a tragic hero. Shakespeare draws upon this idea, as we can be positioned to interpret that Hamlet is searching for a script, an art form to follow so that he can mandate his actions. Hamlet seeks the player to re enact what the ghost told him in order to see his uncle’s reaction. Through this, he finally decides that the ghost’s words are true “He hath killed my king!”. This becomes symbolic in making us realise how the theatre becomes iconic in portraying reality and truth. Hamlet, in this sense, becomes a play that is very much self-reflexive, as it explores the concept of theatre as being inescapable which is ironically done through a play itself.

Stoppard transforms this idea of art as a mirror to reality, extending Shakespeare’s use of metatheatre represented by Guilderstein claiming “don’t you see, we are actors....the opposite of people!” . Stoppard’s transformation of the notion of art both critiques the constructiveness of theatre, at the same time showing the artificiality and nonsensicalness of theatre.

Through his use of the players and his play in language, he critises the role of theatre in Shakespeare’s time. He shows it as being a representation of power structure. In Hamlet, there is a firm sense of status and location, with art forms centres on the privileged-mainly the nobility. As a result, minor characters like Rosencrantz and Guilderstein and the players are marginalised. The scene when Hamlet appears in Ophelia’s closest is mimed on stage, where Hamlet’s dishevelled and pathetic appearance can be in full view “pale as his shirt..with a look so piteous. This scene was originally not performed in Hamlet, but by showing it in R &G, the audience is made to feel uncomfortable because hamlet is shown in a light that we are not accustomed to. As a result, Stoppard is asking us to question how excluding and including events in theatre have the ability to manipulate what we believe. We come to realise that when we respond to hamlet, we are influenced by its reputation, and Stoppard is making an explicit comment on the shaping and marginalisation that occurs in theatre.

During the 20th century, The theatre of the Absurd was a popular type of theatre that was growing. It was mainly a movement that was concerned with displaying the artificiality of theatre. The performances were not centred on the story, rather its context and the experience of watching. Stoppard employs absurdist devices throughout the play as it becomes evident that his transformation is closely tied with these ideas. “Fire” “where?” is a clear example of a device used in the theatre of absurd. Rosencrantz’s acknowledgement of the audience is purposely done to remind us that we are watching a play. Along with this, Stoppard’s emphasis on the players are significant in bringing his transformation of theatre across. The players are symbolic of the idea that humanity is a construction of theatre. “To be tricked into believing someone was watching!” shouts one of the players as they find that they play is made pointless by the lack of audience. This is clearly ironic, as they are speaking to actors themselves. The scene brings out the idea of an ever-broadening field of perception where it questions our own actions in life- “ are we acting because we think we are being watched?”. Such questions were common in 20th century exientialism. Through this, it becomes evident that Hamlet, has been transformed through imaginative reshaping of the element-theatre. Where initially, ideas on art was primarily about its importance in portraying reality, In R &G a more critical and absurdist view is brought out.

Stoppard’s imaginative reshaping of Hamlet’s core elements such as art and identity is successful in its transformation.

Writer's Block: Friends and acquaintences

What differentiates a friend from an acquaintance? When does one become the other?

View 501 Answers

a friend is someone who you can talk to about and laugh at things that are beyound the usual "hows work, hows school, hows you brother etc"
An acquaintance becomes a friend when you actually get to sincerely enjoy each other's company and find extra time to go out with.
